Discover the Flora of the Kamberg Region

The Kamberg Valley, with its Midlands mist-belt grasslands, is home to a variety of plant species that thrive in this unique environment. These grasslands are dotted with:

  • Endemic Wild flowers: The region is renowned for its vibrant displays of wild flowers, including the delicate red-hot poker and the rare Drakensberg cycad.

  • Indigenous Forests: Patches of indigenous forests shelter a diverse range of plant species, from the towering yellowwoods to the hardy proteas, all contributing to the ecological tapestry of the area.

  • Medicinal Plants: The flora here is not just beautiful, but also historically significant, with many plants traditionally used by local communities for their healing properties.

Our Conservation Efforts

We are deeply committed to preserving the delicate balance of this unique ecosystem. Our efforts to protect the Bearded Vulture are part of a broader mission to safeguard the entire habitat, ensuring that both the fauna and flora continue to thrive.

  • Supplemental Feeding Sites: We have established vulture restaurants within their breeding range to provide essential food sources.

  • Monitoring and Documentation: Our team carefully tracks individual vultures and other species to gather critical data for their protection.

  • Collaborative Partnerships: We work closely with the African Raptor Centre and the Endangered Wildlife Trust to support specialised breeding programs.

  • Vulture Viewing Hide: Our hide offers a perfect vantage point for observing not just the vultures, but the entire ecosystem that surrounds them.

By visiting Silver Hill Lodge, you are directly contributing to our mission of conserving the Bearded Vulture, protecting our precious ecosystems, and preserving the rich biodiversity of the Kamberg region for future generations.
